POSITION OVERVIEW:
Join our team at the Maple Ridge Leisure Centre and Hammond Outdoor Pool as an Regular Part Time Aquatic Leader! We're on the lookout for passionate individuals who thrive in a fast-paced aquatic environment and are eager to take their leadership skills to the next level.
 
As an Aquatic Leader, you'll be at the heart of our operations, making a tangible impact on both our team and customer experience. From mentoring new staff to handling challenging situations with grace, your role will be diverse and dynamic. Whether you're lifeguarding, teaching swim lessons, or providing crucial administrative support, you'll be the cornerstone of our aquatics team.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
High school graduation, completion of a post-secondary certificate program in a related field, and aquatic leadership experience, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Sound knowledge of the theory and practices of lifesaving, NLS standards, Water Safety Instructor standards, CPR, first aid and teaching techniques pertaining to aquatics.
  • Working knowledge of the rules, regulations, administrative practices, procedures and policies governing the work performed.
  • Sound knowledge of the principles, practices and objectives of aquatics and recreation programs.
  • Sound knowledge of programming requirements, aquatic standards and leadership methods.
  • Working knowledge of pool chemistry, water filtration, chlorinating, heating and related pool equ ipment and operating procedures.
  • Ability to plan, develop, coordinate, evaluate and promote programs, services and events to meet the identified needs and interests of target populations and to provide leadership and instruction on same, as required.
  • Ability to participate in recruitment, training, evaluation and supervision of staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to assist superior in coordinating and administering aquatic programs at an indoor/outdoor aquatics facility.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide variety of internal and external contacts and groups, volunteers, program participants, community groups and members of the public.
  • Ability to lead public relations with facility users.
  • Ability to take initiative, exercise judgement and to work independently in the development, coordination and implementation of programs and events.
  • Ability to use a variety of materials and equipment for pool maintenance and facility cleanliness.
  • Ability to act for a superior for short absences and with defined limits.
  • Ability to participate in preparation of program budgets, to monitor expenditures and revenue and conduct programs within budget allocations and to evaluate, prepare statistics and compile reports on same.
  • Ability to attend to first aid incidents.
  • Ability to prepare oral and written reports, to prepare and maintain correspondence, records, reports, promotional material and to perform related clerical tasks, as required.
  • Ability to assume responsibility for pool operations, as required.
  • Ability to provide on deck supervision and training of lifeguard/instructor staff and to participate in interviews, testing, orientation and ongoing mentoring of staff and volunteers.
  • Ability to display sound aquatic skills and to instruct in these skills at standards set by relevant professional societies.
  • Ability to perform duties for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to deal effectively and courteously with staff, public and user groups.

 
LICENCES AND CERTIFICATES

  • National Lifeguard Award.
  • Lifesaving Instructor Certificate 
  • Red Cross Water Safety Instructor’s Certificate.
  • Pool Operator Level 1.
  • Standard First Aid with CPR, Level C/Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  • Class 5 British Columbia Driver’s License.

 
HOURS OF WORK
The regular hours of work will be between 20-32 hours per week.
